There are some purchases you make because you need them, and then there are the ones that quietly change your everyday life. For me, Gardyn falls into the second category.
Every trip to the grocery store seems to come with higher prices, produce that doesn't stay fresh as long as I'd like, or another headline about a food recall or produce-related illness. With recent concerns surrounding fresh produce and foodborne illness outbreaks, many of us are paying closer attention to where our food comes from. While growing your own food doesn't eliminate every food safety risk, it does give you something incredibly valuable—confidence in knowing how at least some of your food was grown and cared for.
But my Gardyn journey actually began for a much more personal reason.
After my family moved, I lost the outdoor garden I had spent so much time building. I missed walking outside to pick fresh herbs and vegetables, but I wasn't going to miss battling weeds, insects, unpredictable weather, and everything else that comes with traditional gardening.
I wanted a way to continue growing food indoors year-round.
More than anything, I simply wanted to become a better gardener.
At the time, I had already experimented with starting seeds and growing herbs in jars of water, but I wanted something that would help me learn while also producing food my family could actually enjoy. My goal wasn't complicated—I just wanted to grow enough fresh produce to make a salad whenever I wanted one.
My First Impression
When my Gardyn finally arrived in March 2024, I was genuinely excited.
Because I was completely new to hydroponic gardening, I signed up for the Gardyn membership. During that first year especially, having Kelby—the AI assistant built into the Gardyn app—gave me confidence. It monitored my garden, reminded me when plants needed attention, and helped make the learning curve feel much less intimidating.
Assembly was surprisingly straightforward. Once everything was together and the plants were in place, I was impressed with how thoughtfully the entire system worked. The app, automated lighting schedule, watering system, and overall design made it easy to get started, even for someone with no hydroponic experience.

Watching Everything Grow
One feature I've come to appreciate is Gardyn's built-in journal, which automatically captures photos as your plants grow. While I no longer have all of my original setup photos from 2024, the journal has preserved many of those early growth stages, making it fun to look back and see just how much the garden has changed.
Watching tiny sprouts transform into full harvests never gets old.

A look back at the whole growth journey.
What I've Grown
One of the biggest surprises has been just how much I've successfully grown.
Over the past two years, my Gardyn has produced:
Multiple varieties of lettuce
Spinach
Kale
Basil
Cilantro
Oregano
Thyme
Rosemary
Sage
Chamomile
Chives
Bunching onions
Broccoli
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Jalapeños
Bell peppers
And every season I'm excited to try something new.
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Herbs
Peppers
Cucumbers
My Daily Routine
People often ask whether maintaining a Gardyn is difficult.
Honestly, it's become one of the easiest—and most enjoyable—parts of my day.
Every morning or evening I simply walk by and check on everything. I love seeing what's changed overnight, spotting new leaves, flowers, or vegetables that are almost ready to harvest.
Most weeks, maintenance simply means topping off the water tank and adding Gardyn's plant food and HydroBoost to keep everything healthy and the system running smoothly.
Every few weeks I clean the reservoir, refill it, and start the cycle again. That’s really it.
What Gardyn Has Taught Me
Gardyn has done much more than grow vegetables—it has taught me how plants actually grow.
I've learned how to stagger planting times so new crops are ready before older plants finish producing. I've learned when pruning encourages healthier growth and when it's actually better to simply leave a plant alone.
Every harvest teaches me something new.
One of my biggest goals when I bought my Gardyn wasn't just to grow food—it was to become a better gardener. Looking back, I can honestly say it accomplished exactly that.
Today I have both an indoor Gardyn and an outdoor garden, and the lessons I've learned indoors have made me much more confident growing outside as well.
🌿 My Favorite Gardyn Crop
If I had to choose just one thing to grow, it would be lettuce.
There is nothing quite like harvesting fresh greens minutes before making a salad.
It has completely changed my weekly meal prep, and it's one of the simplest pleasures that still makes me smile every single week.
What I Wish I Knew Before Buying a Gardyn
If I could go back and give my beginner self a few pieces of advice, it would be these:
Don't wait too long to plant your next crop—stagger your plantings so fresh harvests never stop.
Regular pruning makes a huge difference.
Don't be afraid to experiment with different vegetables and herbs.
If you're new to hydroponics, the Gardyn membership and Kelby AI are incredibly helpful during your first year.
Be patient. Every harvest teaches you something new.
Would I Buy a Gardyn Again?
Without hesitation.
In fact, I've already been looking at adding one of Gardyn's smaller systems so I can expand what I grow. I'd love to experiment with even more vegetables and continue challenging myself as a gardener.
Gardyn didn't just give me fresh produce.
It helped me reconnect with a hobby I genuinely love.
It gave me the confidence to keep learning, made growing food feel accessible year-round, and brought a little bit of nature into my home every single day.
For me, it has been one of the best investments I've made—not just for the harvests, but for the happiness it brings every single day.
